How should I prepare for the SAT essay (I’m taking the SAT in three weeks)?

I’m feeling daunted by the fact that people say to include specifics (including names and dates) in the essay. I’m not very good at recalling specifics like that. Could you recommend general topics I should research about in advance?

Specifics are important because they provide detail to bolster your argument. They make your examples seem credible and show rather than tell.

There is some disagreement about whether personal anecdotes are okay to use on the essay. If you cannot think of any historical/literary examples, it’s okay to use personal stories (make them up if necessary) to support your thesis. However, if you are striving for 11-12 on the essay and are not an excellent writer, you might want to aim for literary/historical examples.

Here are some topics that can be spun to support many different themes (although some are a tad cliche):
    World War II
    Civil Rights Movement
    Women’s Rights Movement
    Most of Shakespeare’s plays

Just remember a few key dates, people, etc.

And the best practice is to actually try writing some essays. Just google "SAT essay prompts" and you’ll have many to choose from.

    Good luck!
