How would you start your introduction for a formal essay on the SAT or ACT test? My friend’s teacher told her to not start the introduction of a formal essay with a question, but my teacher says it is okay. Which would be correct?

Starting with a question can be a good idea. It all depends on how it’s executed. Here’s an example:
"Is it appropriate for a student to start his or her formal essays with a question? It is surrounded by much controversy, but this writing technique does have a number of benefits."
