Calling all smart car futurists…
I was thinking about the smart car’s success over the past ten years and began to wonder what impact the smart car will have on the world in the next ten years and my speculations made me ask the question: Is the smart car starting a revolution as to what the future vehicle will be?
With ALL the benefits the smart fortwo offers and its approaching 1 million vehicles soon, could the smart car become The World Car?
Some food for thought:
- The smart fortwo is doing very well here in the USA with a strong demand that could require a second manufacturing plant (nicknamed: Smartsville).
- With 37 countries now receiving the smart car and China scheduled to be the 38th in 2009, couldn’t the smart car expand even farther such as India and truly become a global vehicle? After all, China is a huge market with billions of people; they could put the smart fortwo over the top.
- Smart will be offering an electric drive version in 2010 along with its diesel and micro-hybrid engines. This could be the vehicle that other manufactures follow to match the fuel economy and low environmental impact all in one fun driving, low cost vehicle.
Think of it in terms of the mp3 players evolution. iPods were the first to market and even today, when there are many imitations, most people want iPods. I think it may be that though smart is one of the first and others will follow, people will still prefer the smart car. You can’t argue with the tens of thousands of people on the smart car reservation list!
This …I would call a revolution… for a better Earth to live on.
