When bad SAT Essay writing is good

Did you know that bad writing can be good?  I’ll give
you an example.

People say NEVER use cliches in your formal writing
like the SAT Essay.

That’s supposed to be BAD.

They say never use colloquial phrases like “screw up.”
Or onomatopoeia like “uh oh.”

Did you know that all these things are wrong?

When you’re writing your SAT Essay it’s OK to use
cliches if you change them just a little bit.

For example, the common phrase “A picture is worth a
thousand words” is not very useful if you repeat it
verbatim.

However, if you change it just a bit, it becomes
original.

One student in response to an essay on whether we know
a person best through their actions or words wrote:

“‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ is a saying that
applies to the newspaper industry and applies to
understanding people as well.  The picture created by a
person’s actions tells us more about them then all the
words they will ever say.”

Wow!  That’s powerful.

Here’s another example:

In an essay about dictators one student took the phrase
“he ruled with an iron hand” and changed it to “he
ruled with a golden hand” because this leader used
money to influence people.

Imagine how high your SAT Essay score will be when you
master this skill.

Imagine how much easier it will be for you to get into
college and graduate with honors when you can write
like this.

With this trick and others taught in my course SAT
Essay Success you’ll achieve all this and go on to have
